THE GREAT HEATH LEDGER. MUCH RESPECT TOWARDS HIM & ISAAC BROCK!

THIS PORTRAIT IS COURTESY OF THE SUN “THE BEST IN THE U.K FOR NEWS, SPORTS, CELEBRITIES & TV” <—- I WOULD ADD MUSIC AND GOSSIP IN THERE, BUT I AM UNFORTUNATELY NOT EMPLOYED BY THE SUN (YET);) THIS STARTED OFF AS A SHORT BLOG ABOUT LEO’S LATEST GIRLFRIEND AND HOW HOT SHE WAS AND I IMMEDIATELY WENT OFF ON A RANT ABOUT HEATH LEDGER BEING THE BEST ACTOR OF MY GENERATION.. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT IF YOUR FELLING CHEEKY~

DAMN, I WISH I WAS BRITISH = I GUARANTEE THAT I WOULD BE A SUCCESSFUL MUSICIAN OVER THERE BECAUSE THEY APPRECIATE ART AND MUSIC THAT TAKES RISKS AND BREAKS MOLDS AND DOESN’T FOLLOW ANY TYPE OF FORMULA AND I BELIEVE I DO THAT BETTER THAN ANY AMERICAN ARTIST/MUSICIAN THAT ISN’T SIGNED.. IN MY NEXT POST, I WILL DELVE FURTHER INTO WHAT I MEAN.. CHEERS~ LIKE ELLIOTT SMITH WOULD SAY: xo

I HAVE HAD THE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO MEET & EVEN KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ISAAC BROCK FROM MODEST MOUSE & UGLY CASANOVA AND EVEN THOUGH HE HAS PLATINUM SELLING RECORDS HAS HIT #1 ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS WITH “WE WERE DEAD BEFORE THE SHIP EVEN SANK,” HE IS MORE HUMBLE AND DOWN TO EARTH THAN ALOT OF MUSICIANS I MET THAT WERE LITERALLY 3RD & 4TH GUITARISTS ON AN ARTISTS SIDE PROJECT.. ANYWAYS, ANY FRIEND OF HEATH LEDGER'S (ISAAC BROCK BEING ONE OF THEM) MUST HAVE BEEN A SUPREMELY COOL MOTHERF#CKER~

LEO IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTORS OF THIS GENERATION, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE UNFORTUNATE PASSING OF HEATH LEDGER WHO I BELIEVE WAS ON HIS WAY TO BEING THE GREATEST OF MY GEN~ MAN, IT STILL FN PISSES ME OFF THAT HE DIED BEING STUPID, I MEAN A LOT OF US HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH SHIT AND EVEN TAKEN IT TOO FAR FROM TIME TO TIME, BUT FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND OF HIS PILL INTAKE, IT WAS UNREAL & HIS DOCTOR’S SHOULD BE PUT IN JAIL.. WELL, I GUESS WHEN YOUR AS RICH & POWERFUL AS PEOPLE LIKE HIM, YOU CAN & WILL GET WHATEVER YOU WANT. IT JUST SUCKS, SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR.. A BABY GIRL.. THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME THAT HE NEVER EVEN GOT TO SEE.. AN OSCAR FOR HIS AMAZING PERFORMANCE IN A “SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER” THAT NEVER GET NOMINATED FOR OSCARS, LET ALONE WIN THEM. IT JUST PISSES ME OFF.. HE HAD JUST FINISHED A VIDEO FOR “KING RAT” BY MODEST MOUSE & NOT ONLY IS IT AMAZING, BUT IT STANDS FOR SOMETHING AND JUST LIKE THE GREAT ISAAC BROCK WOULD DO, HE GAVE ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE VIDEO TO A CHARITY PROTECTING WHALES FROM THE SCUMBAGS THAT HUNT THEM~

EMINEM IS APPARENTLY GOING TO RE-UP AND OFFICIALLY REFiLL FANS ON DECEMBER 22ND WITH A RE-RELEASE OF RELAPSE WHICH INCLUDES 7 NEW SONGS~

IT DEFINITELY SUCKS THAT ONLY 7 SONGS WILL BE RELEASED BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR WHEN EVERYONE THOUGHT THAT RELAPSE 2 WAS COMING, BUT IF YOU SAW HIM PERFORM AT THE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS TONIGHT, YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN HIM PERFORM ONE OF THOSE SONGS ONCE 50 CENT WALKED OFFSTAGE. IT WAS EXTREMELY DOPE AND HE WAS SPITTING FURIOUSLY AT A SPEED I HAVEN’T HEARD SINCE THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP~ I WOULD RATHER HAVE 7 SONGS IN A MONTH AND THEN RELAPSE 2 NEXT YEAR AND ALL OF IT BE DOPE RATHER THAN HIM RUSHING IT AND PUTTING PURE $HIT OUT JUST CAUSE EVERYONE WANTS 40 SONGS RELEASED IN AN 8 MONTH TIME PERIOD. I’M GONNA GIVE YOU GUYS A LINK TO A STRAIGHT UP iLL COLLABO BETWEEN MOS DEF, BLACK THOUGHT & EMINEM WHO STRAIGHT UP MURDERS IT~ ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO SAYS HE IS DONE, YOU CAN SHOW THEM THIS LITTLE CLIP WHERE THE WHOLE CROWD GOES CRAZY AT THE END OF MARSHALL FIRING AND THAT IS SAYING ALOT CONSIDERING MOS DEF & BLACK THOUGHT ARE SO DANGEROUS IN THEIR OWN RIGHTS~

THE SONG THAT THIS MADMAN PERFORMED AT THE AMA’S TONIGHT WAS “FOREVER” & IT IS INCLUDED ON RELAPSE:REFILL~ TRUST ME, IT IS UP THERE WITH SOME OF MY FAVORITE SONGS BY HIM~

BEST YOUNG BANDS IN MUSIC~ 4 BANDS BUZZING LIKE A FRIDGE

Manchester Orchestra, The Strongest & Most Emotional Band Out Of These 4 BANDS & THAT IS SAYING A LOT!!!! Not to mention Andy Hull is also part of the sickest side project since Team Sleep & not only is it painfully emotional, intense & beautiful – But, it & he has it planned out so well. They have 2 Albums out right now & their 3rd Album will be the end to a trilogy amongst a concept regarding a Captain of an old fishing Boat who sets sail and finds the thing that he misses, loves, hates & believes in.. Along with insane Sea Creatures that I won’t even ruin for than fan that will look into this. I have so much respect for Mr. Andy Hull & I am going to try and get Andy to give me my first interview ever for my little Blog which will become an actual website once all of my money isn’t going towards helping others. I figure the Karma Police will eventually come & bail me out of these shackles..

Mimicking Birds – Nate Lacy Was Already My Favorite Songwriter In The Indie Game & Then My Favorite Musician From My Favorite Band (American Band & Almost Global) To Sign Them To Glacial Pace. If You Don’t Know Who I Am Talking About, Then You Apparently Need To Do Some Research, I Promise You That Songs Such As "The Loop" & "Cabin Fever" Speak For Themselves & Those Are All Mr. Nate Lacy~!!

Phoenix (One of my Top Albums Of The Year! By Far The Best Musicians Of All The New Bands. Their Sass Factor Reaches That Of HOT FUZZ By The Killers & That Is BEcause Of ALL 4 MEMBERS INVOLVED!! Greatest Band From France, Not The Best Singer.. They Would Be Lucky To Crack Top 10, But I Think Their Upside Is A STRONG A+ ~

He Dreams Awake Is The Weird One Of The Bunch.. I Heard Of Him Through A Mutual Friend & I Was Blown Away With The 40+ Tracks I Got My Hands On & That Is When I FOund Out That He Doesn’t Do Many Interviews, There Aren’t Any Pictures I Can Find Of Him & He Hasn’t Even Released His Debut Album Yet~ His Music Is Very Intriguing & The Theories + Structure That He Uses Or Refuses To Use, Makes It That Much More Mysterious To Me. There Is Something About This Solo Artist Who Obviously Treats Music As An Art & His Title Of Musician More Like A Status Of An Artist. This Doesn’t Sound Right, But I Don’t Know What Makes Sense With This Individual & I Would Put A Lot Of Money On The Fact That Is Exactly How He Is Playing His Cards.. Very Close To The Chest~

So. There Are My Four Best Rising Bands in the Industry~

I Hope You Check Them Out & Give Me Some Feedback On These Four Bands & Better Yet, Who You Think The Best Young Bands Are & It Would Be Cool To Hear Of A Few More Like HDAwake, Artists That Are Still UNDER THE RADAR

I Promised Artwork For INGLORIOUS BASTERDS And As A True Artist, I Am Keeping My Word.. BIG TIME

AS A TRUE WRITER IN MY OWN MIND, I READ THE SCREENPLAY FOR THE FILM BEFORE I WENT TO SEE THE MOVIE SO THAT I COULD MAKE A TRULY FAIR ASSESSMENT OF QUENTIN TARANTINO'S VISION AND METAPHORICAL PULLING OF LE' TRIGGER.

CHRISTOPH WALTZ WAS ABSOLUTELY WORTH EVERY PENNY FOR ADMISSION AND EVEN THOUGH I WAS EXPECTING A STUNNING PERFORMANCE, HE DEFINITELY DID NOT DISAPPOINT~

ON A LIGHTER NOTE, I SAW INGLORIOUS BASTERDS LAST NIGHT

It seems as if I don't waste the time to see movies in the theater anymore unless it is almost guaranteed that I will love it or if it is created by Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino. The latter was the case for my night out last night and even though I was expecting the world ever since I read a raving review for the film when it was screened at Cannes, I still found INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, the new film by Tarantino which apparently skipped on the spell check option, to be pretty damn awesome. I will keep this short and not go into ruining the plot like most of the other reviews that I read, but aside from the middle being a little too long, I found the movie to be well written and superbly acted. There is something about Quentin Tarantino that I find fascinating and it might be because he is a true artist out of left field, like myself or it might be how excited he is about the process even after all these years, but I find that even the poster art for his films seems to get me excited. For that exact reason, I am going to post all of the different posters for the movie I can find, because I feel that art and the sense of sight can prove as much as any and all words I could sit here
and type. There are about 4 Billion opinions in the world that people could find the time to care about, but not as many are formed with a heavy dose of artistic savvy plus the time included for a pretty cool presentation. I consider my blog to do just that ;)

DJ AM HAS LEFT THE EARTH ALONG WITH ALL OF THE OTHER GREAT PEOPLE GONE LONG BEFORE THEIR TIME

He survived a horrific plane crash not even a full year ago but still apparently didn't realize how precious life really is. That mighty come off a little harsh, but I am so sick of the talented youth of our country slowly killing themselves. My friend from around the corner hung himself at the community pool just a week ago and I am still upset about Heath Ledger for some reason, probably because he was so damn talented, but these days it seems as if the more talented you are, the higher chance there is of a dark side to your life which usually ends in a bad way.
(case in point being the King of Pop)

It seems like only a couple of months ago, I read an article pointed out to me in a thick magazine along the lines of Vogue (because I am known to read whatever can inform me of things I find interesting which is basically anything with print) which was shocking to me because of the graphic detail surrounding Adam Goldstein's battle with drug addiction including crack rock and the intense situation involving a gun being placed to his own skull which would have ended his life if the gun wouldn't have jammed. It seems as if the battle with crack rock was still a full swing dance that had never ended and one would speculate that the plane crash, which took 4 other peoples lives and spared Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, actually led to Adam taking the prescription pills found lying next to his body.

Authorities will need to conduct toxicology tests, expected to take weeks, to determine what killed celebrity disc jockey DJ AM, a medical examiner's office spokeswoman said Saturday.

An autopsy Saturday of the 36-year-old was inconclusive, said the spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that police found a crack pipe and prescription pills in the apartment where they discovered DJ AM's body Friday evening. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, had openly discussed past addictions to crack cocaine, Ecstasy and other drugs. In October, MTV was to debut his reality show, "Gone Too Far," in which he and concerned families staged interventions for drug abusers. MTV hasn't said whether Goldstein's show will air.

In an interview with the AP last month, he said the show provided a "terrifying" reminder of his own addiction.

"I have to constantly remind myself why I'm here and remember what it was like," he said.

Goldstein rose to fame several years ago as a deejay known for his mashups — blends of at least two songs. He performed in clubs, on concert stages and at exclusive Hollywood parties. His personal life also garnered attention, as he dated actress-singer Mandy Moore and reality TV star Nicole Richie, the daughter of singer Lionel Richie.

Goldstein was critically hurt in a plane crash last September in Columbia, S.C., that killed four people. He was flying in a Learjet after a performance with Travis Barker, a drummer for the pop-punk band Blink-182 and Goldstein's partner in the duo TRVSDJ-AM.

Barker and Goldstein were burned. Goldstein had to get skin graft surgery but resumed performing about a month later.

He told the AP he felt blessed to have survived but was still shaken by the crash.

"I guess I get why they call it 'post-trauma,' because it was very tough. I have really bad days, and I have really OK days," he said.

His body was found after a friend called police to say he was unable to get into the home in New York City's trendy SoHo neighborhood. Paramedics had to break down the door before they found him, shirtless and wearing sweatpants, in his bed around 5:20 p.m. on Friday, the law enforcement official said.

There was no evidence of foul play.

MiNDBLOWiNG = Pasco County Is Evolving With Video Companies & Record Labels~

I remember moving here close to 20 years ago, I had just started going to School and the road my house was on, Decubellis was all dirt. Fast forward 2 decades and my how time has flown by, Decubellis is now a massive road that goes all the way from one side of the city to the other. I never imagined that this city would have anything to offer, but I was checking out Craigslist today and I realized that there are two Newborn Independent Record Labels in the area; one focused on Hip Hop & the other on Indie Rock. If that isn't cool enough, there is also a Video Company called Kelby Media Group that is an industry leader in digital imaging education and publishing. The Rock Label is called 24 Hour Service Station and it is home to Artists that create music very similar to the noise that I like to call Art~ The Hip Hop Label is just getting off the ground and they are looking for producers that make really hot beats for the Rappers on their Label and it just so happens that I am that kind of Producer. And finally, Kelby Media Group is looking for an Intern for their Video Company to help with all the different tasks needed to keep a very successful Digital Imaging Outfit on top of the competition. So, whereas I have always created music, written songs and worked on all different types of Video & Film Projects with the big picture always pointing towards the big cities where most of my collaborators live, this is a new day in Pasco County because there are actually solid foundations being built in the Film & Music Industrys right here in the same area where the little dirt road used to be.

CHRIS BROWN IS THE SCUM OF THE EARTH & INSTEAD OF BEING THE MJ OF OUR GENERATION, HE IS THE IKE TURNER

I COULD NEVER STAND CHRIS BROWN, BUT HIS LATEST BULL$HIT WHERE HE "APOLOGIZED" 6 MONTHS TOO LATE REALLY MAKES ME WANT TO THROW UP~
THE APOLOGY WAS THE MOST INSINCERE GESTURE I HAVE EVER SEEN, HE WAS DRESSED LIKE A COMPLETE TOOL, BUT HE READ EVERY WORD HE SPOKE WHILE HE CLOSED HIS EYES EVERY FEW SENTENCES TO TRY AND TAKE AWAY FROM HIS EYES DARTING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT OFF OF HIS CUE CARDS. I CAN'T STAND CHRIS BROWN AND I HOPE HE NEVER RECOVERS FROM THIS.

I COULD HAVE TOLD YOU THIS LAST YEAR, BUT PAULA ABDUL IS NO LONGER ON AMERICAN IDOL~

Thanks to Gawker for hooking it up, like they always do~

American Idol charming kook Paula Abdul has not, we repeat, NOT received a contract for next season, which starts shooting in, um, three weeks. Is it the end of television? Will FOX fold? It's Armageddon!

"It does not appear that she's going to be back on 'Idol,'" says Paula's manager David Sonenberg. He's tried and tried to get some sort of deal from producers Fremantle Media and 19 Entertainment, but well... we all know what it means when Hollywood doesn't return calls. Blame new judge Kara DioGuardi. Paula's status as Queen of AI felt rocky as soon as there was a new girl in town. We smell a catfight!

Ryan Gay/Straight/Gay Seacrest, meanwhile, sits pretty and overly tanned with his three-year, $45 million deal. Oh, Paula, we love you, because you're cra-ay-ay-azy!

NOT LIKE I PAY ATTENTION, BUT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO HAVE JON & KATE + 8 FORCED DOWN YOUR THROAT!

It's another sign of the Apocalypse being right around the corner, hence the long title of my Blog; It blows my mind that Jon and Kate are considered celebrities and are covered more by the media than our President. Their poor 8 kids are already scheduling their therapy sessions! To think of all the money that those two scumbags make by completely ruining their kids lives while pimping them out like Terrence Howard in Hustle N' Flow. Not only do they have millions of people tuning into their pathetic show and just as many people buying the numerous magazines that they (dis)grace the cover(s) of, but they aren't even married anymore and Jon is already engaged to another chick who is young enough to be one of his eventual 20 daughters. I have seen 2 minutes of their stupid show besides the clips that Joel McHale has blasted on The Soup and I will never understand what kind of people help contribute to their enormous paychecks by caring about their boring lives. I don't know why I just went on this rant, I Guess It Is....

SAID THE GRAMOPHONE IS QUITE POSSIBLY THE MOST UNIQUE MUSIC BLOG ON THE NET~ CHECK IT OUT

TIME Online has done a piece on the 25 Best Blogs in 2009 and there are quite a few interesting Sites included on their list. Among them is a Music Blog that covers artists that no one has ever heard of and not only are they pushing the envelope in that regard, but they are also breaking these artist's out and they are really amazing bands. Every aspect of the MP3 Blog is unique & clever including the name: Said the Gramophone. As the Beasties would say, Ch-Ch-Ch-Check it out!

A daily sampler of "really good songs" as judged by the three Canadian music fans who compile the site. Launched in March 2003, Said the Gramophone was one of the first mp3 blogs that actually let you download and listen to the music being described. And when it comes to music, hearing is believing. How many times have you bought a CD on the recommendation of a magazine or newspaper review only to find the music sounded nothing like the description? Said the Gramophone solves that problem, although you have to act fast on listening to the music — all songs are removed from the blog within a week or two of posting. The capsule reviews are reliably thoughtful with occasional forays into the surreal, and most songs are accompanied by a link in case you want to buy them immediately. It's a great, low-risk way to get turned on to new music.

Quite Possibly The Best Filmmaker Of Our Generation, Wes Anderson Is Creating His Most Ambitious Film To Date Titled: Fantastic Mr. Fox

In my opinion, Wes Anderson is the most creative & original Director since Scorsese and the only Writer/Director to come between them in the timeline is the obvious choice: Q AKA Quentin Tarantino. Q.T has Inglorious Bastards coming out in August and I can't remember looking forward to a movie more since The Departed and when I read the reviews from The Cannes Film Festival, it made me look forward to it even more. From what I could tell, his new movie got the same response as a little movie known by Pulp Fiction, ever heard of it??! Filmsactu.com has two photos from Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, starring the voice talents of George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Bill Murray. One is essentially the same as the image we saw last week, but it is much larger and shows a couple more characters. The other shows only Mr. Fox (Clooney), standing in a library or study in front of a painting of a bunch of badgers — does that mean he’s in the home of Mr. Badger, voiced by Bill Murray? See the images in full after the break.

It’s interesting that these show up now, because a couple of sites that republished the image that JoBlo had last week were hit with cease and desist orders from Fox. That didn’t make sense, since the image seemed to have been officially released, but this is the Fox publicity department, so who knows?

I like seeing these images in better resolution than the original picture. They make the film look a lot less animatronic and creepy; the second solo image of Fox is much more like what I expected to see in the first place. There’s still a great handmade quality, and the models definitely don’t look like what we’ve come to associate with original director Henry Selick. Too bad about the glazed look on Fox’s face in the group shot, but the rest of the characters look better than I’d originally given them credit for.

The story follows Mr. Fox and his conflict with three mean, greedy farmers from whom he’s been stealing food. Wes Anderson teamed up with animator Mark Gustafson to direct the picture. Fantastic Mr. Fox is set for release on November 13, but we still figure it will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which begins on September 2, and perhaps show up at the Toronto Film Fest a week later.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE HAS SHATTERED ALL 48 HOUR RECORDS! SLASHFILMS REVIEW

This article contains SPOILERS for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but NOT for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows]

SLASHFILM HAS A 4 PART SERIES DEDICATED TO THE NEW HARRY POTTER FILM AND ALL I CAN SAY ABOUT THE FIGUREHEAD RUNNING /FILM IS: WOW! HE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I AM AN IMMEDIATE FAN~ YOU CAN CHECK OUT THE LINK TO READ THE OTHER 3 PARTS OF HIS SERIES..

Over the past seven days, I have plowed through 15 hours of Harry Potter movies in an attempt at exploring the cultural phenomenon of this series. Crucial to this adventure has been my complete unfamiliarity with the Harry Potter books. Unencumbered by the expectations and anticipations that accompany Potter-fandom, I tried to evaluate how well these films work as films in their own right.

The process of adapting thousands of pages of novels into a series of movies is undoubtedly daunting. The closest analogue in recent memory is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Taken as films alone, that series had flaws that are occasionally inherent to the adaptation process, especially for books set in a fantasy universe (as opposed to, say, a procedural crime drama by Grisham). For example, characters, whose rich back stories fill the books, were sometimes introduced with very little context, and story elements were occasionally confusing, since they could not be explained at length.

The Rings trilogy, however, had a lot of other things going for them to distract from their flaws as films: Stunning direction and a unifying vision by director Peter Jackson to guide every movie; epic and crowd-pleasing battle scenes that used state-of-the-art (at the time) special effects technology; the simple, underlying story of the bonds of friendship between Frodo and Sam; and the back-to-back-to-back event-style theatrical releases that took place during the holidays three years in a row. The Potter series has to deal with different challenges and after watching all six films in one week, culminating with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, I am unfortunately more aware of its flaws than ever.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

The latest film in the series sees Hogwarts amping up their security, as Voldemort’s Death Eaters increase the frequency of their attacks. A shield of some sort (never explained in the movie) is established around the school to protect the students and staff from the Death Eaters, but the devious Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) may have devised a workaround. Moreover, a series of assassination attempts on Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) bring urgency to his attempt to destroy Voldemort once and for all. In doing so, he enlists the help of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) to cozy up to one of Voldemort’s old instructors, Professor Slughorn (Jim Broadbent). Meanwhile, Hermione (Emma Watson) is directly confronted with her feelings for Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint).

After hearing the buzz and knowing about the more mature nature of this book, I had high hopes going in. Director David Yates not only had the ability to see where his predecessors had failed and succeeded as directors, but he himself had turned in an entry to the series already (Order of the Phoenix). The big question on my mind was: With the benefit of hindsight and with his considerable talents behind him, could Yates create a film that worked not only as a Harry Potter movie, but as an adventure movie on its own?

My answer: Not really.

There is a lot to like about Half-Blood Prince if you’ve seen the previous films. As the latest entry in a series of very similar films, it completely works. It is, perhaps, one of the most beautiful movies of the year, with excellent cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel (The IMAX trailer for this film, which is embedded above, is my favorite trailer of 2009 thus far). There is a lot of humor in the interactions between the students, and when Ron implicitly rejects Hermione, you feel just as angry and frustrated as she must. Our reaction to these scenes is only possible after having spent time with these characters for nearly a decade.

There are also plenty of moments of pure cinema in this movie, scenes that made my geek heart swell with pride. I am absolutely in love with the liquid motif that Yates employs for the flashback memory sequences, which feel simple, yet breathtaking. The scene when Harry and Dumbledore travel into a cave to retrieve a Horcrux contains one of the best jump scares I’ve seen in my life, but also features a spectacular fire sequence that’s a wonder to behold.

But even as I was enjoying these elements, the films problems kept lingering in the back of my mind. It should be noted that the movie doesn’t really stand up on its own as well as the other films, since it ends with a very clear cliffhanger. I’m not going to dock points for that, since it’s inherent to the storyline, but what I’m justifiably unhappy about is that the fim squanders some of the little dramatic potential it has. As with some of the less enjoyable Potter films, Half-Blood Prince takes an excessive amount of time in setting up the main conflict of the story. By the time you understand what all the pieces of the puzzle are, the film is almost over.

Arguably one of the most significant twists of the series is the fact that Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) has been working for the dark lord this entire time. In this film, he is introduced, matter-of-factly, as being on Voldemort’s side right from his very first scene. You could argue that his allegiances are actually ambiguous throughout the film, but I would argue that every single scene Snape is in during this film cements his status as a bad guy (not to mention the fact that halfway through the film, we learn about the true nature of the Unbreakable Vow). Also, the final reveal that Snape is indeed the Half-Blood Prince carries no weight with it; what feels like it was supposed to be one of the film’s big moments falls completely flat.

There’s also the matter of Draco Malfoy, who I think is completely wasted in this movie. The idea that Malfoy is chosen to assassinate Dumbledore is incredibly interesting, but he is given almost nothing to do in this film other than stalk around the school’s hallways a lot, get hurt by Potter in the bathroom, then scream a lot towards the end of the film. Why was Malfoy chosen for this task? Why does Malfoy feel this is a task he has to complete? What is the nature of Malfoy’s internal conflict? None of these questions are answered in a satisfying way. I am not exaggerating when I say I literally learned more about Malfoy’s motivations in the first few films, when Malfoy is still a kid and opining about how dirty mudbloods are.

If there’s one thing in the movie that really worked for me, it was Dumbledore and his relationship with Harry. We learn some of Dumbledore’s history with Voldemort, and Harry’s loyalty to Dumbledore is tested throughout the movie (The famous line, “Once again, Harry, I must ask too much of you,” is great not only for Gambon’s delivery but for the pathos it carries). When Dumbledore’s assassination finally comes at the end, it is a death exactly as tragic as it should be, a momentary triumph of evil over good and a signifier that from this point on, Potter and his friends are on their own.

I wanted and expected Half-Blood Prince to transcend the constraints of its pedigree, but I found that overall, Half-Blood Prince exemplifies everything that is right and wrong, cinematically, with the Harry Potter series. It suffers from languid and uneven pacing and manages to contain too much exposition and not enough exposition, all at once. It successfully creates its own universe and lets us inhabit it for a short period of time, yet often struggles with how to make that universe’s events suspenseful or purposeful. The greatest joy in this film, as with the entire series, is getting to spend more time with the characters we know and love. But if I had to guess (since I haven’t read the books), I would say that like the rest of the series, this movie relies way too much on one’s knowledge of the book’s characters to make it thoroughly enjoyable on its own.

/Film Rating: 7 out of 10
